Priorities
The FNEC has the mandate to support, promote and safeguard the lifelong education and the unique cultural identity of First Nations. To fulfill this mandate, it has determined its priority issues.
Current education funding for communities presents serious shortcomings on many levels. Adequate funding being the essential prerequisite for quality educational services, the FNEC has made it a priority to remedy this situation of the underfunding.
The FNEC ultimately aims to set up a complete First Nations education system. Community schools, like other schools, need to be supported in the development of their services at all levels by a genuine system. In this area, the FNEC's priorities are to set up second-level services, develop vocational training and establish a First Nations post-secondary education institution.
The FNEC' s efforts are backed by the that have been built over the last twenty years. Being aware of the importance of united efforts, the FNEC has also aimed at creating partnerships as well as fortifying existing ones.
Considering that the situation of First Nations education in Canada warrants the attention of the international community, the FNEC is represented on the international scene, notably at the UN.
