Microsoft Program

As the regional managing authority for Indian and Northern Affairs Canada – First Nations SchoolNet Program, the First Nations Education Council (FNEC) has the mandate to promote the integration of ICT in the communities. With this in mind, the FNEC has entered into negotiations with Microsoft Canada to ensure the best possible prices for the purchase of Windows XP, Vista and Office professional, 2003 and 2007 licenses. Microsoft Canada has proposed the “Microsoft School Agreement” model to the FNEC, which will enable schools to acquire special pricing on Microsoft Office and Windows operating system upgrades.

In order to meet contract conditions, the FNEC is to act as the purchaser/controller of the agreement and is to utilize the total number of computers located in First Nations schools in the Québec and Labrador region.

The coverage of this licensing agreement is for school computers only. Schools are responsible for maintaining control of their license distribution within their community. It is extremely important that schools respect the license conditions and maintain control of their licensing distribution. Schools wanting to sign directly with Microsoft have this option available; however, the minimum purchase requirement for the Microsoft School Agreement is 300 licenses.

2007-2008 Youth Employment

FNEC Technology is pleased to announce that the funding for the Youth Employment program has been renewed for 2007-2008.

The First Nations SchoolNet Youth Employment program makes it possible for youth workers between the ages of 18 and 30 to acquire relevant experience in the field of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT). The main objective of this program is to help communities offer their Youth members the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in the domain of ICT that perhaps can lead these youth into future ICT workers.
