New Paths- ICT (Information, Communications, and Technologies)
IThe New Paths-ICT program (formerly Schoolnet) aims to promote and engage the use of ICT in schools by supporting the school environment and cultivating teacher and student exploitation of information, communications, and technologies (ICTs). This program supports both FNEC member and non-member schools across the region.
Summary of the Initiatives
- Provide Internet connectivity reimbursement to First Nations schools.
- Support and provide helpdesk services for the regional T1 and fibre-optic networks that are currently comprised of 18 community connections and 10 local fibre-optic networks.
- Coordinate and deploy the use of videoconferencing to First Nations schools.
- Develop and coordinate training activities addressing the needs of teachers, technicians and students.
- Continued development and support of the monÉcole-mySchool Internet Web site project.
- Collaborate with other regional and national ICT programs that offer services in technology (Computers for Schools, Broadband Program) to schools.
General Agreement (Program Registration)
Communities are required to sign the General Agreement Form which will enable member communities and non-member Innu communities to participate in this program. The agreement form needs to be completed, signed, and returned to the FNEC office by regular mail.

Connectivity Reimbursement
Schools are eligible to receive reimbursement for Internet connectivity services. Consistent to previous years (Schoolnet), schools have 2 reporting periods in which to send in their claim for reimbursement;
Reporting Period 1: Deadline extended until October 30, 2011
Reporting Period 2: Deadline March 31, 2012
Schools are required to complete and return the Connectivity Reimbursement Form and are to include copies of connectivity invoices and their own invoice (template provided) to the FNEC.

Software Licensing
Since 2005, the FNEC has continued to renew on an annual basis, two software licensing agreements aimed at supporting schools acquire and implement software within their environment. The FNEC distributes updates via DVD on a regular basis to schools that submit their General Agreement Form. Schools are also required to submit the Microsoft agreement in order to keep licensing numbers current in relation to the agreement.
Microsoft Agreement (School Agreement)
The FNEC maintains a regional Microsoft School Agreement which provides all schools with free Microsoft Office and Windows upgrade licensing. Schools are permitted to use this licensing for computers located in the school and other learning environments that support the delivery of K-12 education services in their community. Schools are required to complete and return the Microsoft Agreement Form in order to participate in this program.

McAfee (Anti-virus)
The FNEC also maintains a regional McAfee licensing agreement that is not as restrictive as the Microsoft agreement. Schools receive the desktop and server suite of the McAfee software that can be used on all school computers. Schools are further permitted to distribute this software to students enabling them to install the anti-virus program at home. No reporting is required for this agreement.
