Take the Bull by the Horns

The guide Take the Bull by the Horns, Get Fit! is an initiative of the First Nations Education Council (FNEC) and was designed to support First Nations communities in the organization of sports and recreation activities for young people. It has two principal objectives: developing a healthy lifestyle and improving personal skills.

Physical activity and recreation are just as important to good health as rest and a good diet are. A significant body of research shows that exercise plays a major role in the learning process. Young people not only develop skills such as manual dexterity, strength and endurance, they also socialize, develop their personalities, set goals and discover their limits. They develop self-confidence and self-esteem to help them take the bull by the horns!

The guide is divided into six sections. The first five prepare for the use of the 45 easy-to-play (and organize) games, which can be found in section six, Game Cards. We recommend that you read all sections preceding these cards carefully to guarantee successful learning and competitive fun. This will help you motivate your students to get moving!

The games featured are designed for young people between 4 and 12. We have made sure that they reflect First Nations culture and some game cards include a historical note. There is also information on First Nations sports and athletes.

We also strongly recommended you make young people aware of the importance of a healthy diet. The nutritional program developed by the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Health and Social Services Commission (FNQLHSSC) can be used in conjunction with this document. From 2008, the program will be available from the health services of your community. For more information on workshops offered in schools and to obtain your copy, please contact your community’s nutritionist or the FNQLHSSC at (418) 842-1540.
